Jungian dream interpretation revolutionized depth psychology by proposing that dreams aren't merely personal but tap into collective unconscious structures shared across humanity. Carl Jung broke with Freud over this fundamental insight: dreams speak not just about repressed personal desires but about universal patterns, spiritual yearnings, and the psyche's drive toward wholeness (individuation).

The concept of archetypes lies at the heart of Jungian dream analysis. These aren't learned cultural symbols but inherited psychological patterns—the Hero, the Shadow, the Anima/Animus, the Self, the Wise Old Person, the Great Mother. They appear across cultures, myths, and individual dreams because they represent fundamental structures of human consciousness itself. When you dream of a wise elderly figure offering guidance, you're encountering not just a memory of grandparent but an archetypal pattern that appears in tribal elders, Gandalf, Yoda, and the oracle at Delphi.

The Shadow represents everything we disown, project onto others, or fail to acknowledge about ourselves. Shadow dreams can be disturbing—confrontations with feared criminals, rejected aspects of ourselves, or qualities we've deemed unacceptable. But Jung insisted that integrating the Shadow is essential for psychological wholeness. What we refuse to face in ourselves doesn't disappear; it goes underground, appearing in dreams as enemies, rejected figures, or the very qualities we most despise in others.

The process of individuation—becoming who you truly are rather than what family, society, or ego demands—occupies center stage in Jungian thought. Dreams assist this process by revealing unconscious contents, compensating one-sided conscious attitudes, and guiding the personality toward balance. A person overly identified with rational thinking might dream of figures embodying emotion and intuition. Someone avoiding necessary shadow work might dream repeatedly of dark figures pursuing them.

Religious and spiritual imagery holds special significance in Jungian interpretation, not as literal theology but as the psyche's symbolic language for describing its own depths and the sacred dimension of existence. Dreams of Christ, Buddha, mandalas, or temples aren't necessarily about religious belief but about the Self—the totality of conscious and unconscious personality, the God-image within.

What distinguishes Jungian interpretation is its both/and approach: dreams are both personal and collective, both reductive (about individual history) and prospective (pointing toward future development), both products of the psyche and revelations of truths that transcend individual psychology, honoring the dream's messages while remaining grounded in empirical psychological observation.
