Evolutionary dream interpretation examines dreams through the lens of natural selection, asking what adaptive functions dreaming might have served throughout human evolution. This perspective views dreams not as mysterious symbols but as biological adaptations refined through millions of years of primate and human development, shaped by survival pressures our conscious minds barely remember.

The threat simulation theory proposes that dreams function as an ancient training ground for dangerous encounters. Our ancestors faced constant threats—predators, hostile groups, environmental hazards. Those whose brains rehearsed escape, fighting, and threat detection during sleep survived at higher rates than those who didn't. Reproduction drove natural selection more directly than almost any other factor—those who successfully attracted mates, raised offspring, and navigated sexual competition passed on their genes while others didn't. Dreams concerning attraction, rejection, infidelity, pregnancy, or offspring may reflect ancient algorithms still running in modern brains.

Costly signaling theory suggests that dream recall and sharing might have served social functions in ancestral environments. Individuals who could report vivid, meaningful dreams might have gained status as seers, shamans, or spiritually gifted individuals. This could explain why humans evolved the capacity for such rich, memorizable dreams when simpler trial-and-error patterns might have sufficed for pure memory consolidation.

Ancestral environment mismatches help explain why modern dreams sometimes feel maladaptive. Evolution shaped our dreaming brains for small-group hunter-gatherer life, not urban civilization with its novel stressors—crowding, anonymous others, abstract dangers, information overload. Dreams of falling may activate ancient fear circuits tuned for literal falls from trees, now triggered by metaphorical "falls" in status or security.

What distinguishes evolutionary interpretation is its functional approach to dreams as biological adaptations rather than cultural creations.
