The Dream
"My dream: I was in either a zoo or a pet store with many animals to adopt. I went by a fish tank that was slightly empty to find a big and brightly colored mantis shrimp near the glass. I was amazed at the color of it and I was surprised that someone had a mantis shrimp. I knew how difficult it was for people to keep them in captivity due to how easily they break glass and are usually aggressive. I went up to it and bent down to put my finger on the glass. I was smiling and thinking about how I wanted to adopt it. The mantis shrimp immediately hit the glass where my finger was on the other side. It kept hitting the glass. It hit the glass 4 times and on the 4th time, the glass was about to break. I had to tell people to come over and make sure it didn’t break entirely and I remember feeling guilty about it because I thought I caused it to try breaking the glass. I was running around trying to get one of the employees to come check the tank, but then I woke up."
✨ Dream Analysis ✨
The awe you felt for the mantis shrimp is key. In your waking life, you love animals and approach them with a gentle, admiring heart. This creature, with its vibrant, impossible colors, represents something in your life that is stunningly beautiful but also powerful, complex, and potentially destructive. Given your context of high stress, relationship conflict, and a new beginning, this could be a passionate new opportunity, a deep-seated emotion, or a part of your own spirit that feels both magnificent and uncontainable.
Your instinct was to connect—to put your finger on the glass in a gesture of communion. But the shrimp reacted not to your gentleness, but to the presence of a barrier. Its violent strikes aren't a rejection of you, but of the transparent wall that separates you. The glass is the fragile structure of your current life: the routines, compromises, or perhaps even a relationship that feels confining. The shrimp’s power threatens to break it, and you feel guilty, as if your desire caused the danger.
Your guilt is understandable but misplaced. You didn't create the shrimp's nature or the tank it's in. You simply recognized a kindred, wild beauty. The anxiety of running for an "employee"—an external authority—shows your fear that this situation is too big for you to handle alone. But waking up inspired and energized is your subconscious correcting that fear. It’s showing you that this powerful force isn't your fault; it’s a part of your reality that demands respect and a sturdier container than what currently exists.
This dream is about the tension between your nurturing heart and the potent, disruptive beauty you’ve invited into your life. The glass isn't meant to hold it.
What Your Subconscious May Be Telling You
- A part of your life or yourself that you find beautiful and compelling is inherently powerful and risks breaking the fragile structures you currently have in place.
- Your desire to connect and care is pure, but you may be underestimating the raw force of what you're engaging with, leading to feelings of guilt when things feel unstable.
- The impending "break" is not a catastrophe you caused, but a necessary transformation. The old container (the glass tank) cannot hold the new reality (the mantis shrimp).
Reflection Questions
- Where in your life right now are you admiring something "through glass"—something vibrant and attractive that feels separate, contained, or potentially disruptive?
- If the mantis shrimp represents a powerful part of your own spirit, what might it be trying to break free from?
- When have you taken responsibility for a "break" that was perhaps an inevitable result of a situation, not a personal failure?
Suggested Actions
- This week, identify one "glass tank" in your life—a situation, agreement, or routine that feels fragile under current pressures. Write down one small, concrete step to either reinforce it or consciously create a more suitable space for what it's trying to hold.
- Channel the shrimp's vivid color. When stress mounts, take 60 seconds to find and focus on one brilliantly colored object in your environment. Let it ground you in the beauty that exists alongside the pressure, reminding you of the awe that started this.
