This means turning toward the feelings we wish to avoid—the grief, the rage, the shame. It means allowing old self-concepts to die without immediately rushing to replace them. It is the "lead" phase of the soul, where we must bear the weight of our own truth.

The goal of the First Stage is not to find the light, but to become intimate with the darkness, for it is the womb of all that will be.

The triumph is not an escape, but the discovery of that inner, crystalline core—the Self—within the decay. It is the realization that our essential nature is not destroyed by the process, but revealed by it. This core becomes the Lapis in its roughest form, the unshakable foundation for all subsequent stages of whitening, reddening, and ultimate gold. The First Stage teaches that transformation begins not with an addition, but with a sacred subtraction; not with building up, but with a courageous and necessary falling apart.
